Overview
Interacting, and being the point of contact for, employees across the globe to assist them with small things like data changes, up to big things like grievances, cultural issues and relocation concerns. I have also assisted in talent mapping and retention, and restructuring.
Skills
Yes, I am definitely more competent, professional and confident now. I feel much more at ease talking and working with senior staff as I have had so much exposure to this. I am a better communicator, and I am able to appropriate deal with delicate issues in the correct way in order to achieve the end result.
Responsibilities
Initially, no. It was a slow start. I really had to push myself out there and get out of my comfort zone to eventually gain a good understanding of how to network. Once I had enough recognition as a competent employee, I had more trust placed upon me and my workload massively increased. By the end I was responsible for large projects that I would have not have expected to have been given the responsibility of.
Support & Guidance
My line manager was great and always ready to support. I definitely felt like I could go to anyone in my team about my issues. Additionally, both future careers and Manpower are there for you if you ever feel like you need to speak to someone or escalate an issue you might have. It's a supportive place to be.
Culture
Unfortunately it was a bit of a strange year for Unilever as they went through a major restructuring programme that involved redundancies worldwide. This definitely had a negative impact on the placement and the culture wasn't as good as I thought it would be. I think the company is now working towards rebuilding this, but during this specific year, it wasn't great.
Your Impressions
I did enjoy my placement. It took a while to get into it but it is a big adjustment after university anyway. I definitely do not regret it. I'm really glad I did it, and would recommend it to anyone else.
Yes
Be confident, but recognise that you're new, you're not expected to know everything. Don't be afraid to ask the silly questions!
