The Role
I thoroughly enjoyed having the opportunity to apply my skills and knowledge learnt on my university course to my work placement. To experience a real life fast moving marketing department and be a part of it. Meeting new people and working closely with designers and photographers.
I was nervous entering an organisation where I knew no-one and everyone had already established their place within the company, with regards to friendship groups. However I had no reason to worry as everyone was very welcoming and I made friends quickly. I will most defiantly be keeping in touch with my co-workers after I leave my placement.
My manager was relatively new to the department when I joined the company, as he had recently taken over the department from a colleague. For the first few months we worked together to build key relationships with designers and suppliers and through my placement he continued to help me whenever I did not fully understand a task. He was always very approachable and willing to help.
As the company was sales driven not driven by the marketing department, there was little core marketing involved. As a result if there was no large projects going on the department would be relatively quiet.
I was given a great deal of responsibility as the department only consisted of myself and my manager for the first few months, until a colleague returned form maternity, leave I was often left to manage the department and deal with any enquiries.
I learnt the value of time and how to manage it effectively; I learnt that I cannot always complete all tasks at one time as this is often impossible. As a result I learnt to prioritise tasks. I learnt that it is acceptable to ask for help when required, as this is something I was always very wary of doing as a university student. Making friends with my colleagues I had to learn how to separate my work life with my social life.
The Company
I always got on great with my manager and my co-worker when she returned to her role after her maternity leave. As she was experienced in the job role prior to leaving she was able to give me insights and share tips with me. We will continue to keep in touch after I leave my placement.
When I started in my job as it was only myself and my manager there was plenty of room in the office for the both of us to work. However when my co-worker returned earlier than expected off maternity leave there was some worry about where we would all go as the office was only big enough for 2 people for a department which was now made up of 3 people however the issue was resolved quickly and my manager now has his own office and myself and co-worker share an office.
When I first joined the company I was given a tour of the company and introduced to a number of branches the company has in the UK. I was introduced to all the heads of the departments so if I ever required help I would know where to go. I was able to spend some time in each department so that I was able to see how each department contributed to the finished product. As the engineering sector is completely new with me and my manager has many years of experience in this field he gave me an insight into his experience within the market and talked me through the tricks of the trade so to speak.

I would love the opportunity to resume a full time permanent job with the company, I enjoyed my job and I the people I had to opportunity to meet and work with.
The Culture
I made friends very quickly in the organisation; my manager said that I fitted in well. There were always events and nights out being organised which I always attended as I made some very close friends as my placement, whom I will continue to be in contact with after I leave.
The location of the placement where I worked wasn鈥檛 too far from my home and university therefore I already knew the area well and knew what to expect. I continued to live at home during my placement.
I worked in an industrial site which was situated in within many housing estates so there was not much of a town or nightlife. However as the place where I work was sort of familiar to me the nightlife was only 40 minutes away.
As there was not much in the surrounding area most events organised were social nights out.
