    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • My primary role is to assist the international regulatory affairs strategy team with their ongoing projects. My personal work includes, but is not limited to, supporting clinical trial applications and working with the online filing system. Daily work can vary greatly depending on who needs help and with what, leading to a very diverse range of tasks and learning opportunities.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • Yes. New skills I've learnt include the processes and software used at Vertex, as well as generally learning a great amount about regulatory affairs as a field and the running of clinical trials. Existing skills I've developed include communicating effectively with a wide range of people from different departments and backgrounds, as well as typical stuff like time management and using basic software such as Office 365.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • Yes. Not so much at the beginning, whilst I was still learning about the field. However, as my knowledge and confidence has grown throughout my placement I have had the chance to lead several projects of varying importance.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • I had a significant level of support. I always felt like there were people to turn to if I had questions or doubts. At the beginning, whilst I was still learning the basics, my teammates were extremely patient with explaining things to me. I had an amazing manager who I met with regularly and who worked hard to help me make the most of my placement.

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • A bit overenthusiastic at times, but overall very friendly and energetic. They put a lot of emphasis on company culture, promoting good values such as speaking up and putting patients first. In general the atmosphere amongst colleagues is positive, and people are friendly and social. I will also give a small shoutout to the fact that they give out a lot of free food, which is a big positive.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I enjoyed it a lot. I learned a LOT, especially having come into the placement knowing nothing about the field. I've been able to do a lot of interesting things throughout the year, keeping me constantly engaged. I've also had positive relationships with all of my colleagues and the other placement students at the company, and made what I hope to be some lifelong connections.

  • 7. Would you recommend Vertex Pharmaceuticals to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to Vertex Pharmaceuticals
  • Do not be afraid to be your authentic self. I admitted to not knowing the answer to one of the interview questions and I still got it. They value genuine human connection. Also, on a possibly less positive note be aware of the location. Placements with Vertex are either in London or near Oxford, and that can be costly.
