Overview
Day-to-day responsibilities include assisting with the management of business processes such as CRC and IC. There is also a fair bit of ad-hoc analysis and data handling. Internally, interactions occur mainly within the wider team, but there are occasional meetings with American and International colleagues. Externally, projects drive interactions with vendors. For example, I am currently working with IQVIA to collect customer universe data.
Skills
I have learnt and developed my skills in: Presentation, Meeting Facilitation, Effective Note-taking, Business Writing, and Project Management. Also, I have become more proficient in Microsoft PowerPoint and Excel. Power BI and Tableau were two pieces of software I was not familiar with prior to starting my placement, but I am continuing to improve.
Responsibilities
Yes, once I had completed the necessary training and onboarding I was quickly given responsibility during my placement. Being given increasingly important tasks within different projects before eventually given ownership of my project.
Support & Guidance
The Early Careers team provided a lot of support and assistance at the start of the placement and were on hand throughout. My manager was very invested in my development and success, always making time to meet and discuss any questions I might have. Finally, the entire team are supportive of placements students, encouraging you to ask questions.
Culture
Vertex is growing quickly, and this requires employees to be agile and proactive. However, this doesn't fuel a high-stress environment. Numerous steps are taken to ensure the well-being of employees.
Your Impressions
I have not finished my placement yet, but should it continue as it has been going, I will leave having enjoyed myself and feeling a real sense of personal development.
Yes
You're not expected to have industry knowledge when you apply, but you must show a desire to learn. During any interviews, lean into your strengths but don't shy away from your weakness. Instead, highlight how you would like to improve them.
