About You
I enjoyed the insight day because of two main reasons. Firstly, I really liked meeting and engaging with all of the other students from different universities. I felt there was a good mix of people from different and interesting backgrounds who I got on well with. Secondly, and probably more importantly, I liked all of the staff. I felt the staff were very informative and helpful but it was done in such a way that I didn't feel overloaded with information.
Throughout the whole day I felt extremely valued by all employees from the moment when I walked in the door to the moment that I left. I felt like all employees were genuinely interested in you and liked having you on board for the day rather than just talking to you because they felt they had to.
In general throughout the day I believed I received lots of support. However I felt the guidance and support became even more useful towards the afternoon. In the property game presentation I felt like there were clear instructions and guidance given by Luke and I like the way it was structured. Luke was also helpful at the end of the day in giving us a briefing of the next stages to the JLL process. I also felt the graduate, Steve helping our group providing us with information was incredibly helpful as well.
As I am currently studying Industrial Economics. While the skills that I learnt during the day were not directly applicable to my degree course, I will be able to apply the concepts I learnt and information I gained indirectly, for example, quantitative surveying. Having said this, as I am pretty sure I want to have a career in the property sector, so the knowledge and skills I learnt on the day will definitely help me in the future.
The Company
I thought the day was well structured in that it gave me lots of detail and experience but it also gave me time to meet and talk to people during lunch and the breaks. I thought all of the different activities were well thought through. However, my only suggestion would be I wish I had slightly more time work shadowing and slightly less time networking as there seemed a bit too much.
Overall, I thought the atmosphere from the people and the workplace itself was very positive and I thoroughly enjoyed being part of it for a day. I particularly liked the finishing touches and unique aspects that JLL had e.g. the ropes near the lifts which run through all of the floors which I鈥檓 told is in every JLL work location.
In this insight day it was less focused on personal training and development but more on providing you with experience and an insight into what it would be like to work for the company. In terms of training, we were given some when we were participating in the property game, particularly on the areas and questions that our presentation had to cover.
As the insight day was only a day it was hard to understand what it would be like to work at JLL full time. However, for a day鈥檚 worth of experience I thought it gave a really good indication of what it might be like to work at JLL, particularly its culture. To make the insight day better, my suggestion would be for there to be slightly more time to work shadow perhaps with a few people rather than just one person.
In general, not that much on company culture was covered directly. Having said that it was definitely possible to sense that JLL has a very open culture with all employees respecting each other and working together as a team. It was also indicated that JLL is looking for ways to be sustainable.
Very helpful. Before attending the insight day, I had quite a good idea that I wanted to go into the property industry based on other work experiences that I had really enjoyed. However, the day at JLL confirmed this and I鈥檓 now 99% sure I would like to have a career in the property sector but not sure which part of it.
Everything Else
Unpaid and not reimbursed. The fact that I was not paid for this insight day did not influence my decision in any way about attending as I was purely going to get advice/experience, determine whether I liked the property industry and seeing if I liked JLL as a company. However, it would have been nice if you were reimbursed for the travel costs.
Yes, there were opportunities for networking. Out of all the companies I have been to for work experience, JLL were the best for networking and meeting employees, especially employees in the JLL graduate scheme. However, as mentioned previously, I think there were too many opportunities for networking during the day.
JLL made a big emphasis on networking into the future. They made you really fell valued. This was because they indicated that the insight day was not just to meet you once but was to build a relationship with you such that you could continue to ask them questions into the future. This has been confirmed by subsequent emails from JLL.
I did find out about some activities outside of work when speaking to employees. They strongly indicated that there were a diverse range of extracurricular activities that JLL run other than just work such as football and rugby or even just going out for lunch with your colleagues. In a perfect world have liked to find out slightly more about these.
I would definitely wholeheartedly recommend this insight day to a friend even if they were not completely sure that they wanted to go into the property industry. The reason for this is that the day was really engaging, with lots of useful information, fun and well-structured. In particular, I learnt about the different types and range of jobs in the property sector and JLL cover lots of them.
